During the entire march, we saw each other many times. She seemed friendly and cheerful to me. We exchanged glances and sometimes smiles. I decided to take a picture of her but never got to know her.

Capturing this shot was a challenge for me. Standing merely two steps away, I focused my lens on Mona, who sensed my presence. She averted her gaze, intentionally avoiding eye contact. Patiently, I awaited the opportune moment when she glanced at the camera, and that’s when I captured this image. Her eyes revealed the depth of her life, encompassing moments from childhood to the present. It was indeed a challenging shot.

It naturally provokes many questions regarding the efficacy of law enforcement agencies. The magnitude of these crimes raises concerns about the protection and justice afforded to Indigenous communities, prompting reflection on systemic issues, historical injustices, and the need for meaningful change.

Like the bear, she may possess an inner strength that allows her to navigate life’s challenges.
